Highly recommend and has a lot of "mind-explosions" while reading "The Revolution Will Not be Funded: Beyond The Non-Profit Industrial Complex" by INCITE!. It's a vital read for activists, politicians, and well-intentioned people working in, supporting, and using non-profits as a primary or as the sole mode to create the world that we want to live in. I think most of us on the Left will find this incredibly informative and it will give many people tools for how to consider alternative visions for creating social change. As MLK said, “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring." This book does not suggest that we do away with non-profits all together, but provides a very necessary critique of how they can and often serve(d) to function in ways that stifle the creation of the deep, social change that is necessary to create a truly equal world. Being "non-political" is a necessity to gain tax-exempt status from the government (which allows the mega-rich to determine where their wealth goes through foundations rather than it going to the govt so that it can be decided by the people). And in order to appeal to the extraordinarily rich funders of many non-profits, organizations must shave off the radical edges of their political analysis thus stifling much of the potential for the kind of revolutionary change that is required for true justice and equality. If you REALLY want to work towards equality, the education in this book will provide you with tools, questions, and education that is sorely lacking but desperately necessary in the majority of political and social justice conversations. "Thus, the call to move beyond the non-profit industrial complex goes beyond a critique of the system but instead requires us to think about what modes of organizing we want. There are no easy answers to this question. Thus this text should be read less as a prescription on the "right" way to organize and more of an invitation to think about what other possibilities exist that may include elements of but are not bound by current modes of organizing." #McGReads
