Saturday was #MayorGarcetti 's inauguration for 2nd term. #BlackLivesMatter LA @blmlosangeles & #WhitePeople4BlackLives @wp4rj were there to remind him and the people of LA that the fight for justice must continue and that we cannot rely on the supposed good will of Garcetti to stand by those that are most marginalized. LAPD is the most murderous police department in the nation. Chief Charlie Beck does not seek the accountability that the community of Los Angeles deserves, and this is why we demand that Garcetti #FireBeck . Just a few weeks ago, an LAPD veteran was arrested for the (statutory) rape a 15- year old cadet. The culture of the Blue Wall of Silence that is propagated by Chief Beck is the prefect breeding ground for police misconduct and zero accountability that allows these terrible injustices to persist. From the in-custody death of #WakieshaWilson lacking any transparency, along with it taking 3 days for the family to be notified about her death, to missing video footage surrounding her it, the LAPD needs to #FireBeck . Garcetti’s recent backing of the treacherous Charter Amendment C was instrumental to it getting passed and clearly demonstrated his allegiances to the most murderous police dept in the country over the people of the City that he is supposed to serve. The amendment’s ONLY purpose was to create LESS police accountability and Garcetti supported it despite its opposition from the ACLU, LA Times and nearly every other progressive org in the City that urged citizens to vote #NoOnC . Garcetti uses lots of great rhetoric. But simply saying that LA is a “city of sanctuary” does not magically make it a sanctuary city. No more so than does the declaration that “All men are created equal” magically negate the genocide of Native people or the horrors of slavery inflicted on those stolen from Africa. And neither does Garcetti’s proclamations of opposition to Trump erase the 23% spike in homelessness from last year that has 58,000 people experiencing homelessness in LA. Abolitionist, Fredrick Douglass said; “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." We, the people, must hold them accountable.
