A butterfly, a dove, or an angel. This was one of the most surprising forms of aurora I have seen, captured in March 2012 from Lapland, Sweden. The Earth magnetic field forces the trapped solar particles to rain down on the atmosphere and cause it to glow over the polar areas, but this was unknown before modern physics. Sami people in Lapland believed that the northern lights were the energies of the souls of the departed. Some Eskimos described aurora as the dancing spirits. Some Indians in the North America described it as a fire in the far north, a reminder from the creator of the Earth.
