Seeing molten lava touch the air for the first time is a surreal experience. It's more than the fact that this melted rock has traveled down to, and up from, the belly of the Earth over an almost incomprehensible amount of time...which is a really cool thought in itself. But to me, what really blows me away, is that you can watch an island being made/expanded in real time. There are not many ways where one can witness such a primal creation with your own eyes, and whenever I see it I am awestruck. I've been coming to Volcanoes National Park for many years, and have always made the trek(s) on foot to see the lava flowing. On this trip, however, I took a doors-off helicopter flight, which allowed me to shoot the flow from above.
