“Old seltzer men never die,” Eli Miller used to tell his customers. “They just lose their spritzer.” Even by age 80, Eli, who delivered #seltzer in Brooklyn for more than a half-century, was beginning to lose his fizz. His back was shot and he was finding it harder to clean and jerk the 70-pound wooden cases of seltzer bottles onto his shoulder. But the lifelong bachelor kept working for one reason. “My customers are my family,” he said. And besides, no customer of his should ever have to resort to store-bought seltzer. After near 60 years on the job, though, New York City’s oldest seltzer man — he’s now 84 — officially sold his route to the city’s youngest seltzer man, Alex Gomberg. His family owns Gomberg Seltzer Works, the last seltzer factory in the city and the place where Eli has been filling his bottles since taking on his route in 1960. At that point, he said, he charged $2 a case. Alex, who’s 29, now charges $40 for a 10-bottle case. He issues paper invoices, accepts credit cards and uses social media. But, Eli said, “this is a young man’s job.” He went on: “The fact that I worked this long is miraculous.” Visit the link in our profile to read more about Brooklyn’s oldest seltzer man, and to see more photos by @hlswift. #?
