This odd-looking fellow is called an aardwolf, and he was photographed at the @CincinnatiZoo. As if on cue, this male, named Chipo, displayed the large mane on his back right when he stepped onto the black background we were using during our photoshoot. They often raise that mane when wanting to look fierce. In the past, aardwolves were often mistaken for hyenas or jackals and killed by farmers who perceived them as threats to their livestock. However, it’s now known that aardwolves don’t like to eat meat. In fact, they have a highly specialized diet consisting almost exclusively of termites. Thanks to that change in perception, farmers now actively conserve aardwolves in their native land of Africa.
