Beautiful hoodoos at first light in Bryce Canyon National Park. Interestingly, Bryce Canyon isn't actually a canyon at all..it is an amphitheater composed of these alien-like formations known as hoodoos. It's easy to see why old Ebenezer Bryce, for whom the park is named, famously said that this amphitheater was a "helluva place to lose a cow". The twists and turns and maze-like nooks behind these hoodoos would indeed make for great game of bovine hide-and-seek. One is tempted to ponder why Ebenezer would choose such a place for cattle grazing in the first place...until you actually stand in the midst of the hoodoos yourself, and then it all becomes clear. Who wouldn't want to walk through this incredible scenery all the time? People in town only heard Ebenezer complain about losing cows, but I bet he secretly loved this place and wanted it all to himself. Maybe "losing a cow" was his code for "going for a walk in nature". With that in mind, I hope you all take after Ebenezer this weekend and go lose a cow.
