A top Republican leader in Congress and others were shot early Wednesday in Alexandria, Va., while practicing for an annual charity baseball game, authorities and witnesses said, sending at least five people to the hospital. President Trump said the suspected shooter, identified by the Associated Press as James Hodgkinson of Illinois, was dead after an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. "He had a rifle of some type," said Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, who was at the game. "And it was a, obviously, a large-gauge rifle." House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip but is in stable condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he is currently undergoing surgery, his office said in a statement.
