Puffin in thrift – LAST TWO PLACES! This is a shout out to anyone who might be interested in travelling with me to photograph puffins and numerous other bird species this coming July 8th-15th. With just two places left on my Shetland Photo tour this will be the last chance for a few years to travel with me to this remote archipelago as I won’t be running this trip next year due to other commitments. Shetland is a place that I know uniquely well having spent multiple summers there working #onassignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック as I completed my story for them on the Northern gannet. I’ll be your guide for the whole week as we explore many of Shetland’s most remote islands and spectacular coastal seabird colonies. This image was taken there a few years ago and whilst it’s a relatively straightforward image of this iconic bird it is enhanced by the rich and varied colour palette of pink coastal thrift, yellow lichen coloured rocks and the deep blue of the distant ocean. It was at this time of year when I was packing up the last few bits of my camping and abseiling equipment, my camera equipment 3 miles away in my car, that I looked down toward the base of cliffs and saw a large pod of killer whales. With no camera equipment to hand my only option was simply to sit and watch, one of the most spectacular highlights of my time there as the pod contained a full family group of large males, females and calves. To sit on a remote cliff top in the UK and to witness such a wildlife spectacle, here in the UK, is a fitting reminder to why these islands will always be one of my favourite wildlife destinations.
