There are some moments we never forget. This day in a village along the flanks of the active volcano, Mount Agung, was one such moments. Painful, poetic. Spiritual and at times, heart wrenching, I was left deeply effected by this ceremony. Layers of fear we harbor within the mind, brought forward when witnessing the intensity a life before us.

Caption ~ Men of the Bali Aga or who are considered the original inhabitants of Bali, parade through their village a sacred cow prior to the Usaba Kawulu Ceremony for the ritual know as the Pecaruan Tabuh Rah Banteng (or sacrificing a sacred bull) in Asak Kangin village located near Mount Agung on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The ceremony, held once a year, is dedicated to Ida Betara ring Puseh Nyoman (the spiritual god which resides in Puseh Nyoman temple). Using axes, the bull will chased by nearly 100 men and sacrificed, its blood poured all across the village while attempting to run from the sharp blades, a sacred event believed to receive a blessing of prosperity and ward evil for the community that resides next to Gunung Agung, the most spiritual volcano in Bali.
