Photo by @jeff_gusky// Hundreds of beautiful art treasures, carved a hundred years ago by World War I soldiers on both sides, are hidden underground beneath privately owned French farmland. WWI was the world’s first modern mass destruction. When life above ground became dehumanized by the unimaginable killing power of modern, high tech weapons, soldiers went underground to recreate a human world. Now in total darkness, the art they left behind gives us a glimpse of what we would do as modern people to preserve our inner lives and that which keeps us human in a time of war.
