Photo by @amivitale on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. A member of the Sri Lankan Army clears land mines outside of Jaffna in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. Though the war ended in 2009, civilians have suffered more than 120 landmine-related accidents since then. In a recent tragedy, two boys died when they picked up a landmine at Kalpitiya on the west coast, on the fringes of the former war zone. People often go to mined fields to collect scrap metal without knowing they often can pick up unexploded ordinances. The government is aiming to clear most remaining mines by 2020.
