Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Rabbit kitten – This image of a rabbit kitten on a warm summers evening is a classic example of how important perspective can be and the benefits of shooting, wherever possible, at your subjects eye level. Not only does the image have much more of an intimate feel but because I have my camera virtually resting on the ground this has the effect of making the background much more distant. If I’m able to make the background more distant then it becomes much easier to throw it out of focus, thereby concentrating all of the attention on the rabbit and making for a more punchy portrait. Of course images like this can feel a little one dimensional as it says nothing of the habitat in which this animal lives, nor of the relationship between the rabbit and its environment but these are the decisions that can only be made once at a specific location, or with a particular opportunity. My general rule of thumb is that if the backdrop adds nothing to the image, or detracts from it somewhat then I’ll try to exclude it but my preference is usually to include it wherever possible. As our native and non-native wildlife face ever increasing pressures, though to be fair rabbits are doing ok, then it is becoming increasingly important for photographers to produce images that are more than simply pretty pictures but instead demonstrate the importance of protecting not only the species, but also the entire ecosystem in which they live. With that in mind however there will always be a place for these kind of images, on calendars and magazine covers and ultimately, with every opportunity in which we find ourselves its simply just a case of producing the best image that the opportunity allows.
