Photo by @jeff_gusky// This lightbulb has been hanging in the same place for over a hundred years old. About twenty years ago, some friends uncovered the entrance to a wholly intact World War I rail tunnel that descends rapidly into the earth. It was used to bring stone and dirt back up to the surface from dozens of secondary offensive tunnels that were dug by the French to place explosives under the German front line and blow them up from below. Underground mines were weapons of terror. On the surface, one moment the front lines were quiet. The next moment, hundreds of men were killed in an instant. Often times, the men who died were subjected to such force from the explosives that there would be nothing left of their bodies. The people of WWI were modern. They were affected by modern life like we are. They marched enthusiastically into a meat grinder, blind to the unfathomable danger that lay right before their eyes. We have much to learn from them about the way modern life can blind us to danger. #history#hiddenwwi#wwi#hidden#smithsonian#europe#france
