Photo by @CarltonWard // A male Florida Panther traverses pine flatwoods in Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. The Florida panther is the last puma in the United States surviving east of the Mississippi River. Until this year, the known breeding population was isolated to the southern tip of Florida. Now numbers are rebounding and two females have been identified further north in the Florida peninsula. Florida's human population is growing by 1000 people per day and 100,000 acres of wildlife habitat are being lost to development each year. Our challenge is to protect enough land in the Florida Wildlife Corridor to allow the panther to continue to recover. Because a panther has a home range of up to 200 squares miles, if we protect the land needed for panthers we will save habitat for thousands of other species, plus the forests that clean our air and the wetlands that gather our water. From this perspective, the panther can help is save Florida. Please follow @carltonward and @fl_wildcorridor as we follow the #pathofthepanther to #keepflwild.
