Adam et Ève belongs to a series of paintings that the artist began in the early 1930s. The appropriation of mass media had been a central part of the artist’s oeuvre since World War I, and here he takes an image from a soft-core pornographic magazine as his source. These playfully parodic works are often considered to be among the very first 'postmodern' pictures.
