Rockhopper Penguins earn their name – Video by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho / @ナショナルジオグラフィック – During the breeding season in the Falkland Islands, these Rockhopper Penguins must go to and from the sea via a near-vertical slab of rock. Going down is relatively easy, often an inelegant tumble and slide down into the churning surf. But coming ashore is an entirely different matter; the returning birds must time their landing to avoid getting smashed on the rocks, plant their feet on the steep rocky slope, and then scramble as quickly as they can to get up before the next crashing wave plucks them off and pulls them back down. Although this group was remarkably successful getting ashore, I saw many who tried over and over again without success, repeatedly scrambling nearly to the top, just to be washed away again, over and over again.
