Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hare grooming – I like images such as these that can end up having a very minimally abstract quality, a moment where perhaps the viewer is not completely sure of what he/she is looking at. This image is also slightly deceptive in that it has a quiet calm about it which belies the ferocity of the conditions under which it was taken. As is so often the case with this relaxed mountain hare, quietly and unassumingly going about its business, I have spent an age lying shivering next to it, waiting for those predictable 30 minute cycles where it wakes from its slumber, has a stretch and yawn, maybe a nibble then a quick wash before going back to sleep again. The trick in between those hard earned periods of activity is to convince oneself that the next one will be worth waiting for, perhaps the next one will provide that something extra that justifies my borderline hypothermia. I was almost glad when I noticed an annoying piece of heather sticking out of the snow, compromising the quality of my images as it gave me something to do, something to move for. Sliding forward on my belly I built a small snow bank about half the distance between me and the slumbering hare, my glacial but not exactly silent ice sliding approach, followed by some Trump-like wall building had not gone unnoticed, the hare deciding that it at least warranted the opening of a single accusatory eye. This was about the maximum level of interest that the hare showed in me during our entire time together but with my architectural masterpiece complete I returned to where I’d previously lain. With the heather now conveniently obscured it was then simply a case of waiting for the next cycle of activity, the resulting images at least a little improved by my impressive and ingenious construction ?
