20 Years ago on these nights of April 1997 the Great Comet Hale-Bopp became the king of the night sky. At age of 19, when Tehran was home, I was a young editor at an astronomy magazine. Together with fellow astrophotographer @oshindzakarian we were imaging the comet every few nights from the nearby Alborz Mountains. This simple photo on an ISO1600 film made a couple of magazine covers and launched my professional photography career, thanks to a comet which was seen even over bright cities. The both blue ion tail (pushed out by the solar wind) and the white dust tail was visible to naked eye like this image (though pale in color). It was an enormous object in the sky and remained visible to the unaided eye for 18 months -- longer than any other comet in recorded history. While it is expected to return around the year 4385, you don’t have to wait that long! There is one Great per decade in average so there is a good chance to see another one in the next few years. Seeing one of these from a dark sky place is an Unforgettable experience. Follow me @babaktafreshi for night sky photos and stargazing travel stories.
