Look closely — these are pictures of bacteria. Synthetic biologist and @TEDFellow Tal Danino plays with microorganisms for a living, manipulating them in a petri dish to create these vibrant patterns. By making some tweaks to the conditions (like the temperature, humidity or growth time), Tal can cause the bacteria to morph into highly unique shapes. A little scientific dye or food coloring takes their mesmerizing look to the next level. "They each have their own personalities, if you will,” he says.
