High above Earth orbits NEOWISE, a telescope that scans space 24/7 looking for asteroids that could potentially plummet toward our planet. Unlike other telescopes, NEOWISE sees the sky in the thermal infrared, meaning it detects heat. This allows it to easily spot asteroids that are dark as coal. Astronomer Carrie Nugent works with the IPAC at Caltech, where her team uses this telescope and many other tools to explore the universe. Her new TED Book “Asteroid Hunters” is out today, and it takes a deeper dive into her work to protect us from the same fate as the dinosaurs. Watch her #TEDTalk at go.ted.com/asteroidhunter
