This is a before-and-after look at a once-abandoned bank on the south side of Chicago. When potter Theaster Gates bought it, it was decrepit and filled with six feet of standing water – a relic of a forgotten neighborhood. Thanks to Theaster’s work and leadership, the bank, now called the Stony Island Arts Bank, has become a center for exhibitions, archives and music performances celebrating the city’s vibrant history. Theaster and his team at the Rebuild Foundation have transformed many other buildings like this one, proving that art can truly be a catalyst for change. “I believe that beauty is a basic service,” he says. “When there are resources that have not been made available to certain under-resourced cities, sometimes culture is the thing that helps ignite the community and get people reinvested in their place.” In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are highlighting some of our favorite #TEDTalks from African-American speakers. Visit go.ted.com/reviveculture to watch Theaster’s talk and learn more about the amazing work he’s doing in Chicago.
