What if balloons could power the Internet? That was the idea that inspired inventors at X (the research-and-development facility formerly known as Google X) to start Project Loon, a mission to bring the Internet to remote areas via a network of balloons in the stratosphere. After significant trial-and-error, the team, led by TED speaker Astro Teller, found a way to create a functioning product. They spent the past year flying around the world service testing. Their secret to success? Celebrate failure. “We spend most of our time breaking things and trying to prove that they’re wrong,” Astro says. “Enthusiastic skepticism is not the enemy of boundless optimism. It's optimism's perfect partner. It unlocks the potential in every idea.” Watch his #TEDTalk at go.ted.com/internetballoon to learn more about Project Loon and X’s other ambitious ideas.
