Wouldn’t it be a dream if your IKEA furniture could assemble itself right out of the box? That is computational architect and @TEDFellow Skylar Tibbits’s goal. He’s working with a team at MIT’s International Design Center to create a whole array of programmable materials that can change shape according to instructions pre-programmed into them. Think: a flat piece of plastic that can morph into a shoe, or even a carbon fiber air inlet that can move up and down to control airflow into a jet engine. The possibilities are endless. “We are finding ways to program every material — both ones we already use, like wood, leather and carbon fiber, and also newly invented materials,” Skylar says. “It’s a really interesting sweet spot to be working in — mixing the radical and the relevant.” Learn more about @skylartibbits and the incredible work happening at the @selfassemblylab by visiting go.ted.com/smartmaterials
