Blessing, Juliet, and Gift are just three of the thousands of girls trafficked from Nigeria to Europe each year. Once they reached Italy, they were sent to a makeshift camp in a former baseball stadium. Traffickers often coach girls to lie about their ages, so that they are sent to the country’s main reception centers, where migrants can move about freely. That way they can leave to do sex work in Palermo, or across Europe. 80% of the Nigerian women who cross the Mediterranean are trafficked into sexual exploitation. This winter, Blessing, Juliet, and Gift were placed in a shelter for underage migrants. “The reason that I will not do prostitution is my mummy,” Blessing said. “I am my mummy’s breath of life.”
