Doris and her children live in Benin City, Nigeria, in a small apartment without plumbing or electricity. In February of last year, her daughter Blessing left home hoping to find education and decent work in Europe. Thousands of girls set out on the same journey voluntarily and find themselves trafficked—many forced into sex work. Three months after Blessing left, Doris received a phone call from a Nigerian woman with an Italian number. The caller demanded the equivalent of $1,500; otherwise, Blessing would be sold into prostitution. Doris borrowed the money.
