"Six weeks after leaving California, we enter the Irrawaddy River for the first time. Our vessel is a well-used wooden skiff. I was skeptical when the deal included two bailing buckets, but the leaks are manageable so far. Our wooden paddles are saturated and heavy, but gloriously long, and we stand while paddling downstream.
