In 1946 when the Oscars were held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Joan Crawford was suffering from pneumonia and could not attend the ceremony. She was nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in "Mildred Pierce". Crawford laid in her sick bed and listened to the proceedings on the radio. It was her first nomination of what would be three over her career. To her surprise she won. Her Oscar was delivered to her home where members of the press had congregated for an impromptu photo shoot that included this image.
