At this point, Steger's #expedition was halfway through an epic 1200-mile journey across of #ArcticOcean from Russia to Canada, via the Pole. The ocean below is about two miles deep and the ice was about 12 to 15 feet thick. In the wake of rapidly warming #Arctic temperatures, however, the extent and thickness of sea #ice has rapidly shrunk and it's unlikely a #dogsled journey would even be possible just 20 years later. #climatechange #dogsledding
