Josephine Baker, was an American-French singer, dancer, and actress. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker moved to Paris at age 18, where she became one of France’s most beloved entertainers.
When Hitler's troops occupied France during World War II, Baker joined the French resistance. Her service earned her the French Legion Medal of Honor.

In 1951, Madame Baker made a visit to the U.S. She performed to rave reviews, and took a personal stand against racism by refusing to perform wherever black patrons were barred.
