On #InternationalWomensDay, we’re highlighting women from history you should know with a series of portraits by illustrator @tribambuka.
Maya Angelou was a Grammy-winning author, poet, actor, director, teacher, civil rights activist and more. Her iconic autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," was published in 1970 and later adapted for television. She was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for her first poetry collection, "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie," and was the first African-American woman to have an original screenplay produced as a movie. She also won three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word Album. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1928, she died at her home in North Carolina in 2014.
