She was the daughter of Finnish immigrants who came through Ellis Island and settled in the UP of Michigan. They were modest and hardworking. During the Depression she studied to become a nurse, then taught chemistry in teaching hospitals, changed her name to assimilate, married and raised a family. After my sister and I left for college, she took care of her mother. She was a widow for too many years. She loved books and stray cats. She was a bit distant and stoic, but had a caring heart. She taught me to work hard, appreciate simple things...to be honest, to love and to care about others. I respect everything about her. Much was unspoken but I understood.
