Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hare stretching its massive hind feet – This image was taken in the last few hours of the last day of my month long trip to work with Scotland’s mountain hares. I had seen the behaviour many times before but this is probably my favourite version of the few times that I was able to capture it. When I’m working in the mountains I tend to favour working without a tripod, not only because of the weight of actually carrying the bloody thing up there every day but also because I find that it tends to slow me down. Much of my mountain hare photography is reactive and I like the fluidity of simply being able to pick up my camera and just shoot but I also find its absence preferable when I’m approaching wildlife. One of the key strategies, much the same with brown hares, is to wherever possible, avoid presenting oneself as a distinct, and often looming human shape and so a great deal of my time is spent crawling or sliding towards the hares. On this occasion however the absence of a tripod was actually a considerable negative as the hare was on an elevated bit of moorland and the only way that I could avoid the sky creeping in to the image was to sit quite high up. I was then forced to try and handhold my 200-400mm for long periods which is largely impossible, especially as the hares often do things at glacial speeds. As such I simply had to just react and so when I got a clue that the hare was about to do this I was fortunate to be able to get the camera up in time. Incidences like this however are rare and of the 27 consecutive days that I spent on the hill I chose to have 26 tripod free.
