On assignment for the Nature Conservancy - Natpauk elephant reserve in Katha offers a refuge for elephants once used in the timber industry to haul logs out of hard wood jungles above the Irrawaddy River. Shrinking forests and a law banning the export of hard woods enacted 4 years ago have put thousands out of work. Young mahouts go into the forests early in the morning to round up the elephants who spend the night there and bring them here for a bath and food. These unemployed elephants have now become a serious problem for Myanmar. What to do with the over 5000 elephants in captivity, the worlds largest population of domesticated elephants?
