Walking with dinosaurs, La Vanille Nature Park, Mauritius - this giant Aldabra tortoise is 120 years old and weighs 250 kilos. Once native to Mauritius, as many as 100,000
greeted the first European sailors who came to the island. They were killed for food as well as for oil which was used as fuel for lamps. The tortoises were a coveted staple brought aboard and stored below decks as they could survive a year without food and apparently taste great. But in the end it was the rats that came with the ships who ate their eggs eventually wiping them out. Now at La Vanille Nature Park, through an active breeding program, they number over a 1000.
