Here, incessant winds racing downhill from the South Pole have polished the surface like glass and daring pilots use this as a runway for large, wheeled aircraft bringing mountaineers, researchers and other travelers to the continent. It is so slick that many visitors bring gum-soled mukluks to keep from slipping onto their tails.
