Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety // Mute swan cygnet shaking itself dry – This is an image of a mute swan cygnet, backlit by evening sunlight, shaking itself dry after bathing. Some people might have you believe that images such as these can only be created in Photoshop, so dramatic is the black backdrop, but this is simply not the case. The first thing that I had to do was find a way of shading my lens from the setting sun, which I was shooting directly towards, and this is often the most challenging part of producing images such as these. In terms of exposure I was interested solely in exposing for the bright sunlit highlights that surround the bird, highlights which are often completely burnt out and free from any detail when photographed conventionally. With a distant backdrop of trees in shadow, and the extreme nature of my underexposure (about -3EV but exposure set manually), the blackness of the backdrop becomes inevitable, as opposed to something that is produced in post-processing. As someone who enjoys the challenge of entering competitions it’s vital to me that my finished images maintain all of the integrity of the original RAW file and it makes zero sense to shoot one way and then fiddle around with the image in Photoshop later. By understanding the vagaries of exposure, and shooting intelligently producing images such as these can be extremely straightforward.
