Loss is never an easy concept to understand. We have a way of coming in and out of each other's lives in sometimes minimal and sometimes profound ways. Each interaction has a pending impact on our selves. When I’m outside climbing, sometimes the sheer insignificance of my size in relation to my surroundings dawns on me and I realize how minuscule we, as humans are. Though, our ability to affect this world and each other is large.
This morning my grandma passed away and it has weighed on me in a strange way. I feel a sudden emptiness in her passing that I can relate with losing past family members and close friends. I have been thinking about what this space that we feel when someone dies means. I believe that it is the presence of someone in your memories that, when they are gone, you feel like a part of that memory goes, too. But the thing about memories and the future is that the past remains and the future is yet to be known. Sadness may be inevitable when we lose people that have been significant parts of our lives but our approach to understanding these losses may be the gift from the departed; A sense of a deeper understanding for compassion, gratitude, and the people that are still present.
Thank you @Keith Ladzinski for this photo. Fly, fly, and soar.
