On holiday weekends, visitors gather at Glamis Dunes from all over the western U.S. and Mexico to race dune bikes, buggies, and other 4-wheel drive vehicles. This 100,000-acre haven for off-road car enthusiasts is part of the Imperial Sand Dunes, the dry bed of Lake Cahuilla, the Salton Sea's ancient ancestor. Thanksgiving is the biggest weekend, in past years attracting more than 150,000 visitors, thereby temporarily more than doubling the population of Imperial County. The combination of daring stunts paired with lots of alcohol has resulted in a number of fatalities during the events. These races continue annually, despite disapproval from those concerned with the environment.
