Most natural history museums were created at a time when people thought they needed to subdue the Earth. Today, the Natural History Museum in Berlin understands its role as an educational one: their mission is to teach visitors about the imperative need to preserve our planet. The collections are so extensive that less than 1 in 5000 specimens is exhibited, and they attract researchers from around the world.

Many species in the Cuckoo family of birds are ‘brood parasites’ and lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. Their eggs have an extra layer which protects them from cracking when dropped into their host’s nest, they often hatch first, and demand constant food with a loud begging call and constantly open bright red beak. Sometimes they end up “evicting” their hosts all together. Within the Ornithology Department’s collection of specimens, wooden boxes hold eggs collected from real nests and contain a single cuckoo egg.
