Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. The cold glow of sunlight barely permeates the fog to illuminate the view from perhaps the most aptly named geographic landmark in the world. The perennial blanket of smoky-blue mist is a natural effect of oily residues and water vapor from its richly diverse forests. Today, this signature blue fog is being replaced by a toxic haze emitted by power plants and automobiles carried by the wind from industrial cities. Dead Fraser Firs, the result of balsam woolly adelgid infestation due to the air pollution, are fast becoming a common sight in the Smokies.
