We were 10 miles offshore, bobbing over the gentle swell, as this 10m/30ft sub-adult humpback whale came over to investigate our boat. The whale began by spinning onto its back and lying under the boat. Its head then broke the surface near the bow with its tail between the two propellers at the stern and two huge pectoral fins on either side of the boat—seemingly giving us a big hug. Once the humpback was satisfied with this posture, it dove out of sight, only to reappear with its enormous head out of the water within touching distance. As I raised the camera viewfinder to my eye, completely in awe of this giant, I spotted its little white whiskers! Also look for the boat's reflection.
