La Paz is the seat of government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia. The city, located in west-central Bolivia, 68 km (42 mi) southeast of Lake Titicaca, is set in a valley created by the Choqueyapu River and sits in a bowl-like depression surrounded by the high mountains of the altiplano. At an elevation of roughly 3,650 m (11,975 ft) above sea level. Due to its altitude, La Paz has an unusual subtropical highland climate, with rainy summers and dry winters.

The Illimani, with 6462 meters (21,200.79 ft) above the sea level, is a mountain of Bolivia, located near the city of La Paz. There is consensus on the origin of the prehispanic name Illimani, but different interpretations and parallel denominations with which it was designated. The Aymara people who inhabited the city called it Illemana: where the sun rises; others called it Jilir - Mamani or eldest son.

The Illimani is the highest mountain in the Cordillera Real (part of the Cordillera Oriental, a subrange of the Andes) of western Bolivia. It lies near the cities of El Alto and La Paz at the eastern edge of the Altiplano. It is the second highest peak in Bolivia, after the Nevado Sajama, and the eighteenth highest peak in South America. The snow line lies at about 4,570 metres (15,000 ft) above sea level, and glaciers are found on the northern face at 4,983 m (16,350 ft). The mountain has four main peaks.
