Maggie Chen from San Diego, California, is one of the finalists in Marvel’s Doctor Strange – The Magic of STEM Challenge, which asked participants to choose a scientific question or mystery that intrigued them, investigate it with a mentor, and explain it in a vlog style video. Maggie’s project focused on how nanotechnology can be used to enhance the effectiveness of antibiotics. Maggie’s interest in this topic started when she saw how illness and medicine affected a family member close to her.
Maggie explained, “When I was around 8 or 9, my grandma actually had a brain tumor. That was really scary for me; to see her have a seizure, to be in that hospital bed. So, I grew interested in medicine and how can we use different fields to target these issues. In particular, I focused on drug delivery, delivering drugs to specific areas of the body. Right now, we take pills and injections, and those drugs travel around the whole body, so you cause a whole bunch of side effects, and you also induce antibody resistance.
