Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Growing up in the heart of rural Mid Wales one of the birds that was an icon of my childhood was the red kite. In the early part of the 20th century this bird was unfairly targeted by farmers and gamekeepers, mistakenly blamed for livestock losses and as such they were persecuted relentlessly, to near extinction. Fast forward 100 or so years and the same misguided individuals are now turning their gunsights on a plethora of other species including buzzards, white tailed eagles, golden eagles, mountain hares, hedgehogs, rats, foxes, badgers, beavers, weasels, stoats, hen harriers, pine martens, grey squirrels, rabbits, crows, ravens and indeed any other creature that dares to flourish, or even attempt to exist in close proximity to these ‘custodians of the countryside’. Fortunately, due to the hard work of educated, compassionate people, driven by the latest scientific findings and extensive research, as opposed to myth and misinformation, the red kite is now thriving in parts of the UK. This success of course will doubtless bring the red kite back into conflict with the modern day incarnations of the self-same people that nearly drove them to extinction in the first place, aided and abetted at all times by our repellently dishonest tabloid ‘journalism’. One such ridiculous piece recently chronicled a ‘fox attack’ where a lady was apparently nipped by an urban fox that had wandered into her house. The absurdly harmful and demonising headline for this not-in-the-least-bit newsworthy event was ‘brush tailed scavenger with a thirst for blood’ (urban fox) recently savaged (bit) a lady that now fears ‘it will come back for her kids’. Such absurdity now seems commonplace in our increasingly privately owned media organisations and this will only serve to make more difficult the job of those that seek to protect and preserve our remarkable natural heritage, and the birds/mammals that seek to call it home.
