Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety // A brown hare running at full speed in my direction – I would love to tell you that the reason that this brown hares’ foot is missing is because of Instagram’s vertical crop issues but alas, that would be an untruth. Having 5-8 hares about 100m away suddenly turn and then sprint, full tilt, in my direction is a hard thing to prepares oneself for but this is what happened one day as I found myself lying in a field margin many years ago. This image actually represents a photographic revolution for me, in that my previous Nikon film cameras, the F5 especially, had a complete inability to focus on anything running directly toward me. Step forward my first proper digital camera, the Nikon D2x, and it was a different story. Of course my current D4s would shred such an opportunity now and it’s an opportunity that I hope to create for myself at some point in the future but this was still a pivotal moment for me as new windows in the photographic world had suddenly opened. The experience was one of pure adrenalin, the hares led by a female in oestrus, hotly pursued by 5-8 eager males, barrelling down a field margin at full throttle, probably at speeds close to 35mph. It was the sound that I remember most vividly as they thundered past just inches from where I lay, completely consumed with the job at hand. When all the hares’ had past my heart was beating so fast and I was desperate to review my images. Glancing upwards I could see that the coast was clear and so I had a cursory look. Moments after seeing that this image was razor sharp the very worst thing happened – another hare out of nowhere thundered past and to this day I’ve always wondered what I might have captured had all of my attention been on that solitary hare. Beware the curse of chimping – it’s a bit like taking a call when you’re driving, it might be tempting but it’s never worth it!
