There are 27 +/- species of sturgeon on this planet and 27 +/- species at high risk of extinction due to over harvest for caviar and hydro power development that constructs dams that blocks migration routes and destroys ancient spawning beds. Sturgeon are considered the most valuable fish on the planet due to the insatiable demand for caviar and the species group at highest risk of extinction. These fish are incredibly unique, they are the largest freshwater fish on the planet, extremely long lived, living to 100+ years and they are late to mature.
