More than 8,200 feet up on the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii is NASA's HI-SEAS simulated Mars base. Its purpose is to run long-term studies to prepare crews for real Mars journeys they will eventually make.
The fourth crew emerged from 365 days in isolation on Aug. 28, and Jeffrey Kluger, TIME’s space writer, spent 24 hours inside the same confined conditions—getting by on dried, shelf-stable foods, one-minute showers and limited power after dark.

In this picture Kluger watches a simulated Martian sunset at the Hawaii base.
