This year, more than 100,000 migrants have fled Iraq, Syria and Libya via boat in an attempt to land in Italy. At least 3,000 of them have perished in the Mediterranean Sea.
Unscrupulous Libyan smugglers stuff the migrants, coming from the warzones, refugee camps, and impoverished villages of the Middle East and Africa, into unseaworthy dinghies and send them out to sea with barely enough fuel to make it into international waters.

No one risks death, torture or starvation on a whim, writes TIME’s Aryn Baker, who, alongside photographer Lynsey Addario, boarded a rescue ship in the Mediterranean.
