The changing landscape of western China reveals a country turning away from its rural past and looking towards an industrial future. In the past three years, photographer Julien Chatelin has made several trips across the region, documenting this transformation.

In this photograph, the world's biggest mall, New Century Global Center, Chengdu, China looms over a hilly pasture. “I was looking for these areas in development, and I would be driving and the country was a non-stop construction project,” Chatelin tells TIME, “It’s almost like you’re in this nowhere place, this place where everything is in suspension, and you’re lost in this constant transition.” Photograph by Julien Chatelin "
